Xenoblade Chronicles – Doing Music Right

Xenoblade Chronicles has been out for a few years now (depending on your region) and I still listen to the soundtrack almost daily. With almost one hundred well-composed songs brimming with heart and energy, it’s incomparable to anything else in music let alone videogames. Many RPG’s have large impressive soundtracks and it’s a huge strength of the genre, but Xenoblade pushes creativity to new heights with the variety and consistent quality throughout. There’s enough here to find something different to listen to every day and for every mood. I think music in videogames is very important, and while not every development team can form a super band of composers like Xenoblade, they should at least try. There’s no reason to let the powerful magic of music go to waste and I’m going to outline some things Xenoblade does right and why it’s the absolute pinnacle of videogame soundtracks.

The Last Story – A New Page In Game Design

The Last Story is captivating. It tells the story of a group of honest mercenaries striving to be knights – not so they can dominate the world – but merely on the hope of a good night’s sleep without one eye open. The story that unfolds is wonderfully intriguing and engaging, and with fun gameplay and interactive environments; you’re not just watching or reading the story, you’re PLAYING it. It’s a fairy tale set in a living, breathing world that embraces the interactive nature of videogames. It’s such a different game in so many aspects and brings a lot of new things to the table in terms of how you approach things as a player. I could fill this entire paragraph with buzzwords and verbal wankery, and still fail to capture what the game is like. Everything has a magical, whimsical story-telling feel to it, like a long descriptive dream with talented British voice actors. It’s a love story because I’m in love with this game.

Radiant Historia – DS RPG of the Year!

Yes, even after playing the game for not much more than a few hours, it’s still plain to see that this is most definitely the DS RPG of the Year.  Though, I guess that’s not saying much considering the only other RPG is Pokemans, is it? (and as if anyone is going to buy that rehashed flop, am I right?)

This is Radiant Historia, an RPG I’m sure most of you have never even heard of, and are probably thinking I just made up off the top of my head.  That’s where I tell you it’s by Atlus and you realize that’s why you’ve never heard of it and probably will never actually find the game in the wild unless you are actually looking for it, and even then it’s harder than finding dat shiny Charizard you’ve always lusted for…
