Yoshi’s Unused Woolly World – Fluffy Daydreams

poochy

What’s that, Poochy? *sniff sniff* Wow! It’s a treasure trove of brand new music! Composer of Yoshi’s Woolly World, Tomoya Tomita, has uploaded some songs to his Youtube account. Included in this playlist are 6 original compositions for Yoshi’s Woolly World that were not included in the final game. It really makes you think, Poochy. What could these songs have been made for? What if there were brand new levels to accompany them, and we never got to see them? Could they still be hiding, somewhere in Woolly World? Let’s use our imaginations and go through the unused tracks one by one!

Matto’s Favorite Switch Presentation Moments

Right, so. Nintendo had it’s big Switch reveal, and most of the Pietriots, myself included, were there to watch it. So while everyone is busy trying to downplay the positive reception to the reveal (ie selfish YouTubers, Game Jounalists, and those scared of motion controls still), I decided to list some of my favorite moments from the reveal. Let’s get going, shall we?

Those gaming thoughts and feels: Quadrilateral Cowboy

Sometimes I half-jokingly tell my friends I think gaming is a degenerate medium. Obviously I cannot claim to truly believe this as I spend so much of my time playing games. But really I think the lived experience of most games is that, played in excess, they are an affront to the human spirit and mind. That is because many games require you to repeat a certain enjoyable task over and over, training you to be dumber and less expectant of creativity and originality in the fictional world.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Finding Fang

fangsorrowI’m so sorry Fang. It’s been 3 years since we’ve had a proper conversation. I missed you so much. I missed everybody, and I’ve been a terrible Mayor. Everyone was so worried while I was blissfully and ignorantly playing other games. Upon returning to my town I was met with a lot of different emotions, and a strong realisation. This town deserves better.

Pietriots Radio – Episode 4 (Switchmas Eve Speculation!)

We’re BACK! Join Grubdog, Bill, Deguello and Matto for some hype and speculation about the Nintendo Switch. With the official event approaching next week (January 12-13), we thought we’d get together to talk about the build-up, games, third party support, and the hardware itself. It’s been a while since the last podcast, so we made this one an extra meaty 2 hours.

Download Link (108mb)

(Recorded through Discord with some small connection hiccups [just Bill leaning back too far on his chair], but hopefully good enough to listen to and enjoy. The added music didn’t cause any cutouts, it’s just there on top. All feedback appreciated.)

If you have any predictions or hopes for the Nintendo Switch event please leave a comment! We’re all gonna look silly when the event is completely different, but it’s just a bit of fun. A Nintendo console launch does not come around often.

Happy 2017 – January Gaming HYPE!

Hope everyone’s doing well. There’s a lot going on in the world, but none of it really matters when you’re sipping some tea with a quality videogame. In any climate, our personal happiness and growth is the most important and powerful thing we can offer the world. 2017 is not a year I am comfortable predicting, it could be really good or really bad depending on a variety of factors out of our control. One thing I do know, is that our ability to have fun and get hyped is entirely within our means. It’s true. You could have fun at any given moment without warning. I want to kickstart the year on this site with a bit of spark, so here’s a buncha fun, real stuff to get hyped for right now in the gaming community.

Dragon Quest VII – For Glory, Fidelia

dqviifideliaI’m so sorry. Upon returning to the past, I realised I had done a terrible thing. I’d left a little girl on her own in a field full of monsters. She just stood there waiting. It was a miracle she was alive with no battle skills. I expected things to just resume from the moment I left her, but my understanding of time had proved to be naive. Time does not care where you are, and continues to push forward in all places it inhabits. So where wert I? I owed Fidelia an explanation.

The Big Problem with the Pokémon Anime

A Pokémon fan simply known as “_Dog” had been shopping this essay around various forums after it was censored from Serebii. I have purchased its publishing rights off my incense and salt importer to reproduce it here with additional attribution to the people quoted. It has been backdated it to its original publication date. May it stand as a testament to what can happen to the adult mind from watching too many Japanese cartoons aimed at children.

Introduction

My first foray into Pokémon was back in 1998, when I got the Game Boy Camera that summer (might’ve been my birthday, can’t really remember). I had a ton of fun with that little thing—the games, the DJ, the photos, among other things. What was particularly cool was being able to place silly stamps on the photos. There were eyes, mouths, accessories, various Mario characters, and some creatures that my older brother referred to as generic “dinosaurs” or “monsters”, can’t exactly remember which word he said. But I used them on my photos anyway, cause why not. Little did I know that wasn’t going to be the last time I saw those critters, oh no. Continue reading “The Big Problem with the Pokémon Anime”

Art of Balance – Collapsing Into a Puddle of Tears

Shin’en have crafted a finely balanced library on the Wii U. To offset the speed and destruction of FAST Racing Neo, Art of Balance is a game about being as slow as possible. I held off buying this game for a long time for that reason, it just looked boring. A bunch of shapes on a plain background. I finally downloaded the game and assembled my own opinion of it.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D – Anxiety On the Go

After getting back into Resident Evil 4 it was just silly that I hadn’t played Mercenaries 3D yet. This game takes the tried-and-true Mercenaries mode from Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 and makes a full game out of it. Dropping the need for a single player campaign, it features dozens of missions that are designed to flesh out the gameplay with no context other than “training”.

New 3DS – New Super Regular Extra Large Comparison DX

Very recently I’ve obtained a New 3DS XL and it has changed my life. First I’ll recap my review of the Regular New 3DS; I thought it was nice but it had some niggling problems that got worse over the months. To be honest, that was a pretty bad writeup. I didn’t wait long enough and I was too excited at getting something new. I shrugged off the flaws as the new 3D effect was so good. However, the more games I played, the worse it felt. The screen also felt too small for the SNES VC, and affected my handheld experience with Super Metroid. I finally decided this was unacceptable and upgraded to an XL. Was it worth it?

Citadale – Not Another Castlevania

I faced a moral dilemma when buying this game on my Wii U. It’s a Castlevania clone that directly re-uses assets from Circle of the Moon and the NES games, with the most simple graphics possible. Alright, sounds cheap and dirty, but those games are a lot of fun. Even if this game is a bit of fun, it’ll be a good night. If I didn’t buy it I’d be thinking about it all night, so here we are. Making dreams reality.
